Hank Hartsfield Hank was picked by the Air Force as an astronaut on the top-secret MOL (Manned Orbiting Laboratory), a cold war manned surveillance space station. After the program was cancelled, he came to NASA, along with MOL-men Dick Truly, Robert Crippen, Karol Bobko, Robert Overmeyer, and Don Peterson, all were too late for Apollo, but all flew the shuttle.
