Astronaut VIP receptionat the San Diego Air & Space Museum
The VIP reception at the San Diego Air & Space Museum takes place at 6:30 Friday night (the 20th.) There will be spectacular "heavy" hors d'oeurves stations, a dessert bar and hosted bar (free drinks), so come hungry. All the astronauts, pilots, actors and our speaker corps, and a maximum of 100 attendees will attend. The Apollo 9 crew of McDivitt, Scott, and Schweickart will be reunited with each other and their space capsule "Gumdrop" after 40 years. (For $100, you'll be able to get a professional photo of yourself and the A9 crew in front of Gumdrop.) The 8x10s will be ready for pickup at Spacefest Saturday in time to have them crew-signed, if you like. The museum has agreed to remove the Plexiglas from Apollo 9 hatch area, and curator assigned to oversee the opportunity for guests to put their head inside the spacecraft, and take a photo if they wish. Another curator will be on hand with the opportunity to see real moon rocks, and the descent engine bell from an Apollo lunar module (not usually on display) Flight simulators will be open from 6:15pm-9pm (Microsoft Simulator, FAC, Max Flight, and XJ-5) The new Da Vinci exhibition will be available at no extra cost. (Normally $25) Impromptu walking "tours" of the museum's huge collection will be undertaken by the museum staff and our well-traveled guests, who will undoubtedly tell fascinating tales of their experiences in various air & spacecraft.
